Shrove Tuesday a.k.a Pancake Day
Fattening versus fasting
This year as we enter Lent, the Chaplaincy team are promoting the idea of ‘Leaner for Lent’ what that looks like in practice will become clear. Do check out our social media accounts today, tomorrow and throughout Lent to find out what we’re up to.
Shrove Tuesday is traditionally the feast day before the start of Lent (Ash Wednesday), so it was the last chance to use up eggs and fats before the Lenten feast so pancakes were the perfect dish! Lent, the 40 days leading up to Easter, was a time of fasting and on Shrove Tuesday, Anglo-Saxon Christians would go to confession and were “shriven” (absolved from their sins). A bell would be rung to call people to confession and this Pancake Bell is still rung to this day.
So today is about fattening; using up ingredients in your house. You may not have the ingredients for crepes or American style fluffy pancakes; but luckily there’s a wide range of variations that are still considered a ‘pancake’. A pancake is defined as, ‘a thin, flat cake of batter, fried on both sides in a pan and typically rolled up with a sweet or savoury filling.’ So any of the recipes below can be picked if you need inspiration.

So now that you’ve chosen a recipe and potentially made it; next comes arguably the best part. Topping the pancake/s with a heap of deliciousness. Maybe a photo for social media… And then it’s time to tuck in. Below you can find a list of some of our favourite toppings.
Bacon and maple syrup
A spread like Nutella or Biscoff
Lemon juice and sugar
Fruit- bananas or strawberries; maybe even stewed apple inside the pancake
Eggs- most pancakes have egg in them, but another egg potentially fried on top is delicious
Enjoy your pancakes today, whichever type you end up making. As Lent begins consider joining our campaign #leanerforlent – not just physically. It’s not just the food for the body that we’re considering, but food for the mind and soul- how does #leanerforlent work as a holistic approach. Do follow along our blogs and it’ll become more apparent.
However, for now- we wish you all a flipping good Tuesday. Do tag us in any pancake photos, especially pancake flipping videos. @chaplaincycccu
